Chase is a Senior Geotechnical Engineer and Engineering Geologist in the Seismic Hazards Program of the California Geological Survey (CGS). His primary role is serving as Geotechnical Engineer for the CGS Essential Facilities (School and Hospital) Review Program. After growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, he earned a degree in Geological Engineering at the University of Arizona, and then practiced geotechnical engineering and engineering geology for several consulting firms of various size in Arizona and California for 18 years before moving to state service at CGS for the past 3 years.
Senior Engineering Geologist, California Geological Survey
Jennifer Thornburg is currently coordinating the hospital and school review program at CGS. Her group performs technical reviews of engineering geology reports prepared by consultants to ensure that the reports adequately address the requirements of California Code of Regulations, Title 24 (2016 California Building Code), and that any geologic hazards relevant to the site are recognized and mitigated. Jennifer has a Masters of Science in Earth Sciences from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and 9 years of experience in consulting. For the past 18 years, Jennifer has worked at the California Geological Survey, performing both landslide mapping and hospital and school reviews. She is a licensed Professional Geologist and Certified Engineering Geologist in California.
Vice President and Senior Technical Manager of Earthquake Engineering, Kleinfelder
Dr. Zia Zafir was appointed to the State Mining and Geology Board on May 24, 2016. Dr. Zafir has been Vice President and Chief Seismic Engineer at Kleinfelder Inc. since 2010, where he has held several positions since 1994, including practice leader, principal engineer and staff engineer. He was a staff engineer at Geo Spectra Consulting Engineers Inc. from 1993 to 1994. Dr. Zafir earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in civil engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno.
